The biopsychosocial model

Remember how we said that it all starts in the mind? It turns out that our brains play a bigger part in how our bodies function and perceive pain than we may have realized.

Scientists have developed something called the Biopsychosocial model that looks at our bodies as a whole. This model shows how our bodies, our minds, and our environment are all connected to each other. 

The biopsychosocial model helps us understand that we are not just an injury or a diagnosis. We are more complex and complicated than that! 

The World Health Organization states that health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.

A behavioral health approach

Your body and brain are not two separate things, although they are often treated that way. Your body responds to how you think, feel, and act. Researchers are discovering that attitudes and emotions can contribute to health conditions. Over time, conditions like chronic stress can take a toll on your emotional and physical health.

Our research shows that many customers find getting to their PT appointments can be a stressful experience. When they get to their appointment, they aren't able to relax properly and they don't feel like they get the full benefit of the session.

Stress management and relaxation are key components to our program. Relaxation exercises are useful in reducing psychological distress and pain intensity in patients with chronic pain. In busy clinics it is not always practical to do these relaxation exercises as they can be too time-consuming.
